The Day after the Deepawali festival people in India (esp. north) celebrate Govardhan puja to pay homage to Go (cows). Actually this word govardhan is a summation of two words “Go+Vardhan”, The word “Go” means cows, and “Vardhana” means nourishment. This festival is in commemoration of lifting of mount Govardhan by Krishna. The young Lord Krishna is said to have held Giriraj up on the tip of a finger for 7 days and nights to shield the people of Braj from the deluge of rain sent down by Lord Indra.
